The Aśokasundarī–Nahuṣa Episode: Demon Stratagems, Protection by Merit, and Lineage Prophecy

यथा शशी विराजेत स्वकलाभिः स्वतेजसा । तथा विराजते सोऽपि स्वकलाभिः सुमध्यमे

yathā śaśī virājeta svakalābhiḥ svatejasā | tathā virājate so'pi svakalābhiḥ sumadhyame

De même que la lune brille de son propre éclat avec ses propres phases, ainsi lui aussi resplendit, pourvu de ses propres excellences, ô toi à la taille fine.

Unspecified (context needed from surrounding verses; likely a male speaker addressing a woman as ‘sumadhyame’)

Concept: True splendor arises from one’s own cultivated excellences; virtues shine like the moon’s phases.

Application: Invest in character and skill; let your ‘kalās’ (good habits, learning, compassion) be what makes you luminous to others.

Primary Rasa: shringara

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A noble youth stands beneath a vast night sky as the full moon glows above, its phases subtly depicted as a halo of crescent-to-full arcs around it. The youth’s aura mirrors the moon’s kalās—each ‘phase’ represented by symbolic emblems of his excellences: a manuscript for learning, a bow for skill, a rosary for tapas, and a lotus for purity.","primary_figures":["Praised youth/hero (the ‘he’ of the verse)","Addressed woman (sumadhyamā) as listener figure"],"setting":"Moonlit palace terrace overlooking a quiet forest line, blending courtly admiration with ascetic destiny.","lighting_mood":"moonlit","color_palette":["silver white","midnight blue","pearl gray","lotus pink","antique gold"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: moonlit terrace scene with the hero centered, gold leaf used to render the lunar halo and ornamental borders, rich jewel-toned garments, the moon with stylized kalā arcs, the listener lady in elegant posture, embossed gold highlights on symbolic emblems (manuscript, bow, rosary, lotus).","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: delicate moonlit landscape, cool blues and silvers, refined faces, the moon’s phases painted as subtle arcs, the hero’s calm radiance suggested through soft washes, palace terrace railings and distant trees rendered with lyrical precision.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines, stylized moon and phase-arcs, hero with large expressive eyes and a luminous circular aura, red-yellow-green accents against deep blue background, decorative floral borders like a temple panel of praise.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: large central moon with lotus motifs, the hero beneath framed by intricate floral borders, peacocks and vines in corners, deep indigo cloth ground with gold highlights, phase-arcs integrated as repeating crescent patterns around the composition."}

FAQs

It uses upamā (simile): the person being described is compared to the moon, shining by its own radiance and ‘digits’ (phases/parts), to convey self-contained splendor and completeness.

Literally it means “with one’s own kalās (parts/digits).” For the moon it naturally points to phases/digits; by extension for a person it can imply “one’s own excellences, arts, or inherent qualities” that make them shine.

“Sumadhyame” is a vocative meaning “O slender-waisted one,” typically used to address a woman. The exact identity (e.g., Parvatī or another character) depends on the surrounding narrative context.
