Padma Purana — Bhumi Khanda, Shloka 18

The Lament of King Āyū and Indumatī: The Abduction/Loss of the Child and Karmic Reflection

दत्तात्रेयः प्रसादेन वरं मे दत्तवान्पुरा । अजेयं च जयोपेतं पुत्रं सर्वगुणान्वितम्

dattātreyaḥ prasādena varaṃ me dattavānpurā | ajeyaṃ ca jayopetaṃ putraṃ sarvaguṇānvitam

Autrefois, par la grâce de Dattātreya, il me fut accordé un vœu : un fils invincible, paré de victoire et doté de toutes les vertus.

Dattātreya

FAQs

Dattātreya is revered as a powerful sage-deity figure whose grace (prasāda) is sought for boons, spiritual upliftment, and protection; here he is explicitly the giver of the boon.

The verse emphasizes the efficacy of divine/saintly grace: through Dattātreya’s favor, the speaker receives a boon of progeny characterized not merely by birth, but by invincibility, victory, and complete virtue.

It suggests that true success and excellence (jaya + guṇa) are framed as gifts arising from grace and merit, and that ideal leadership/offspring is defined by virtues as much as by power.
