The Greatness of the Month of Māgha
Māgha-snāna, Harivāsara, and the Kāṣṭhīlā-Upākhyāna
एतस्मात्कारणाद्भद्रे माघस्नानं विशिष्यते । अहन्यहनि दातव्यास्तिलाः शर्करयान्विताः ॥ १८ ॥
etasmātkāraṇādbhadre māghasnānaṃ viśiṣyate | ahanyahani dātavyāstilāḥ śarkarayānvitāḥ || 18 ||
C’est pour cette raison même, ô dame de bon augure, que le bain au mois de Māgha est tenu pour particulièrement méritoire. Et, jour après jour, on doit offrir en don des graines de sésame mêlées de sucre.

It elevates Māgha-snāna as a specially efficacious purification practice and pairs it with a concrete daily discipline—tiladāna with sugar—showing that inner merit is strengthened by regular outward charity.
By prescribing steady, repeated observances (daily bathing and daily giving), it supports bhakti as a lived discipline—purifying the devotee’s body and intention and cultivating a generous, sattvic disposition conducive to worship.
Kalpa (ritual procedure) is implied: it specifies a time-bound rite (Māgha month snāna) and a daily dāna item (sesame with sugar), reflecting practical dharma-ritual application rather than grammar or astrology.
