Adhyaya 38 — Dattatreya on Non-Identification (Mamata) and the Path to Liberation
धनधान्यमहापत्रो नैककालप्रवर्धितः ।
पुण्यापुण्याग्रपुष्पश्च सुखदुःखमहाफलः ॥
dhanadhānyamahāpatro naikakālapravardhitaḥ |
puṇyāpuṇyāgrapuṣpaśca sukhaduḥkhamahāphalaḥ ||
Ses grandes feuilles sont la richesse et le grain, accumulés au fil de nombreuses saisons. Ses fleurs aux extrémités sont le mérite et le démérite, et ses grands fruits sont le plaisir et la peine.

Even ‘good outcomes’ (wealth, merit) remain within the same tree of appropriation if rooted in ego; they mature into alternating pleasure and pain.
Ethical-philosophical instruction (dharma-jñāna) rather than the Purāṇa’s cosmological characteristics.
Merit and demerit are shown as blossoms on the same structure of doership/ownership; transcendence requires stepping beyond the entire karmic arbor, not optimizing its fruits.
