Adhyaya 31 — Naimittika and Related Śrāddha Rites: Sapiṇḍīkaraṇa, Eligibility, Timing, and Procedure
यथा सुखं जुषध्वं भो इति वाच्यमनिष्टुरम् ।
भुञ्जीरंश्च ततस्तेऽपि तच्चित्ता मौनिनः सुखम् ॥
yathā sukhaṃ juṣadhvaṃ bho iti vācyamaniṣṭhuram / bhuñjīraṃśca tataste 'pi taccittā mauninaḥ sukham
Puis il doit dire avec douceur, sans rudesse : «Veuillez prendre votre repas à l’aise, seigneurs.» Alors ils doivent manger en silence, satisfaits, l’esprit fixé sur ce rite, dans le calme.

The rite is sustained by vāṅ-niyama (discipline of speech): gentleness toward guests is itself dharma, and the guests’ silence indicates focused participation rather than casual eating.

Silence (mauna) during consumption functions as a containment of prāṇa and attention, making the act of eating an inward offering aligned to pitṛ-tarpaṇa intent.
