Virāṭa-parva Adhyāya 54 — Missile-Exchange and Tactical Redirection

vaiśampāyana uvāca | sa śatrusenāṃ tarasā praṇudya gāstā vijityātha dhanurdharāgryaḥ | duryodhanāyābhimukhaṃ prayāto bhūyo raṇaṃ so 'bhicikīrṣamāṇaḥ ||
Ainsi s’achève le cinquante-troisième chapitre de la section Goharaṇa, au sein du Virāṭa Parva du Śrī Mahābhārata, relatif au retour du troupeau lors de l’épisode d’Uttara-gograha. (Selon la leçon additionnelle méridionale, 13 ślokas s’ajoutent, portant le total à 263.) Vaiśampāyana dit : Après avoir promptement repoussé l’armée ennemie et recouvré le bétail, le plus éminent des archers se mit en marche face à Duryodhana, désireux d’entrer de nouveau dans la mêlée. Le vers met en lumière une vaillance disciplinée : la victoire n’est pas un permis de cruauté, mais un devoir selon le dharma en réponse à l’agression, suivi de la résolution d’affronter l’instigateur principal.
