Virāṭa-parva Adhyāya 13 — Kīcaka’s Proposition and Draupadī’s Dharmic Refusal
वासांसि परिजीर्णानि लब्धान्यन्तःपुरेडर्जुन: । विक्रीणानश्न सर्वेभ्य: पाण्डवेभ्य: प्रयच्छति
vāsāṃsi parijīrṇāni labdhāny antaḥpure 'rjunaḥ | vikrīṇānaś ca sarvebhyaḥ pāṇḍavebhyaḥ prayacchati ||
Vaiśampāyana dit : Dans les appartements des femmes, Arjuna obtenait des vêtements précieux, devenus vieux et usés. Il les vendait, puis distribuait à tous les Pāṇḍava l’argent tiré de cette vente, soutenant en secret la famille durant l’exil par des moyens honnêtes et sans violence, sans faire peser son fardeau sur autrui.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even in hardship, one should uphold dharma through honest, non-harmful work and use one’s gains for the welfare of dependents; Arjuna’s conduct models restraint, responsibility, and support of his brothers without resorting to exploitation.
During the Pāṇḍavas’ incognito stay, Arjuna—working within the palace’s inner quarters—obtains old but valuable garments, sells them, and gives the proceeds to all the Pāṇḍavas to help maintain them during their concealed exile.
