Charity becomes ethically sound and spiritually fruitful when (1) the wealth is earned through just means, and (2) the gift is offered with discernment—choosing a worthy recipient and an appropriate time and place—directed toward virtuous persons.
Vyāsa, speaking as an authoritative teacher, lays down a guiding principle about dāna (giving): not all giving is equal; the moral quality of the source of wealth and the suitability of recipient, time, and place determine the excellence of the act.
