Draupadī and Satyabhāmā on ethical household conduct
शम्भुमग्निमथ प्राहुब्राह्मिणा वेदपारगा: । आवसथशथ्यं द्विजा: प्राहुर्दीप्तमरग्निं महाप्रभम्
śambhum agnim atha prāhur brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ | āvasathyaṃ dvijāḥ prāhur dīptam agniṃ mahāprabham ||
Mārkaṇḍeya dit : Les brāhmanes maîtres des Veda déclarèrent qu’il existe un feu sacré nommé Śambhu ; et les « deux-fois-nés » parlèrent aussi d’un autre feu appelé Āvasathya, flamboyant et doté d’un grand éclat.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse highlights the authority of Vedic learning in defining and preserving sacred institutions: ritual fires are not treated as ordinary elements but as consecrated, named presences whose sanctity is affirmed by those who have mastered the Vedas.
Mārkaṇḍeya reports what Veda-knowing Brāhmaṇas say: they identify and describe two named sacred fires—Śambhu and Āvasathya—emphasizing their brilliance and revered status within ritual tradition.
