अग्निर्यश्न शिवो नाम शक्तिपूजापरश्न सः | दुःखार्तानां च सर्वेषां शिवकृत् सततं शिव:
agnir yaḥ śivo nāma śaktipūjāparaś ca saḥ | duḥkhārtānāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ śivakṛt satataṃ śivaḥ ||
Mārkaṇḍeya dit : «Ce Feu, renommé sous le nom de “Śiva”, est sans cesse voué au culte de Śakti. Il apporte continuellement le bien à tous ceux que la peine accable ; c’est pourquoi on l’appelle “Śiva” — le bienfaisant.»

The verse explains the etymological and ethical sense of the name ‘Śiva’: the divine is called Śiva because he continually brings welfare (śiva) to beings in distress, emphasizing compassion and beneficence as defining divine qualities.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing a form/aspect of Agni who is known as ‘Śiva’ and is devoted to Śakti-worship, highlighting his role as a constant benefactor of those suffering.
