Amba–Rama–Bhishma Dialogue on Vow and Refuge
ततः संदर्शने5तिष्ठ॑ं रामस्थातितपस्विन: । प्रगृह्ा शड्खप्रवरं तत: प्राधममुत्तमम्
tataḥ sandarśane ’tiṣṭhaṃ rāmasthātitapaspinaḥ | pragṛhya śaṅkhapravaraṃ tataḥ prādhmam uttamam ||
Alors je me tins face à Rāma (Paraśurāma), le plus éminent des ascètes. Saisissant ma conque d’excellence, je la fis retentir de toute ma force—proclamant au grand jour ma résolution et ma promptitude à l’affronter, sans me dérober au dharma d’un kṣatriya lorsqu’il est défié.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights steadfastness in one’s svadharma: even before a revered ascetic-warrior like Paraśurāma, Bhīṣma signals unwavering commitment to the kṣatriya code—meeting a direct challenge with courage, clarity, and public resolve.
Bhīṣma positions himself directly before Paraśurāma and, taking his finest conch in hand, blows it loudly—an unmistakable martial signal that he is prepared to engage and will not retreat from the impending confrontation.
