अध्याय ५७ — राज्ञः नित्यप्रयत्नः, रक्षा-प्रधानता, तथा त्याग-नीतिः

Chapter 57: Constant Royal Vigilance, Primacy of Protection, and Principles of Dismissal

न विश्वसेच्च नृपतिर्न चात्यर्थ च विश्वसेत्‌ । षाड्गुण्यगुणदोषांश्न नित्यं बुद्धघावलोकयेत्‌

na viśvasec ca nṛpatir na cātyarthaṃ ca viśvaset | ṣāḍguṇya-guṇa-doṣāṃś ca nityaṃ buddhyāvalokayet ||

Bhīṣma dit : « Un roi ne doit être ni entièrement défiant, ni d’une confiance excessive, même envers un homme digne de foi. Qu’il examine sans cesse, d’une intelligence lucide, les mérites et les défauts des six moyens de la politique—conclure la paix, faire la guerre, marcher, demeurer en position, suivre une double conduite, et chercher refuge ou alliance—afin que son règne soit guidé par un discernement prudent plutôt que par l’impulsion. »
