Prāyaścitta-vidhāna: Tapas, Dāna, Vrata, and Proportional Expiation (प्रायश्चित्तविधानम्)

अनादेशे जपो होम उपवासस्तथैव च । आत्मज्ञानं पुण्यनद्यो यत्र प्रायश्व॒ तत्परा:

anādeśe japo homa upavāsas tathaiva ca | ātmajñānaṁ puṇyanadyo yatra prāyaścitta-tatparāḥ ||

Vyāsa dit : « Lorsqu’une faute naît d’un acte dont l’expiation particulière n’est pas expressément prescrite, voici les moyens généraux de pénitence : la récitation des formules sacrées (japa), les oblations au feu (homa), le jeûne, la culture de la connaissance du Soi, le bain dans les fleuves saints, et le recours à des lieux où de nombreux hommes vertueux se vouent à des disciplines telles que le japa et le homa. Ces pratiques purifient et engendrent du mérite : elles effacent la souillure morale et ramènent l’homme sur la voie du dharma. »
