Adhyāya 262: Śabda-brahman, Para-brahman, and the Ethics of Tyāga
Kapila–Syūmaraśmi Saṃvāda
तुष्यन्ति तृप्यतो देवास्तृप्तास्तृप्तस्य जाजले । ब्रह्म सर्वस्वरूप है
tuṣyanti tṛpyato devās tṛptās tṛptasya jājale |
Chūlādhāra dit : «Quand un homme devient satisfait et comblé, les dieux eux-mêmes se réjouissent ; quand le connaisseur intérieur est accompli, toutes les puissances divines le sont aussi. Ô Jājali, le Brahman suprême est la forme de tout ; toutes les divinités ne sont que ses manifestations, et ce Brahman resplendit au-dedans du brahmane qui connaît Brahman. Ainsi, lorsque ce Brahman intérieur est satisfait, toute la multitude des dieux est satisfaite et apaisée.»

True satisfaction (tṛpti) is not merely personal comfort; it is an inner spiritual fulfillment rooted in Brahman-knowledge. When the inner Self/Brahman is honored and made ‘content’ through right understanding and conduct, all divine forces are effectively honored—because the gods are expressions of that one Brahman.
In the Shānti Parva’s instruction section, Chūlādhāra addresses Jājali and teaches him a deeper principle behind ritual and devotion: rather than external appeasement alone, inner realization and contentment aligned with Brahman is what truly ‘satisfies’ the gods, since all deities are encompassed in Brahman dwelling within the knower.
