Adhyāya 240: Indriya–Manas–Buddhi–Ātman — The Inner Hierarchy and Restraint (इन्द्रिय-मनस्-बुद्धि-आत्म-क्रमः)
एवमेतान् योगदोषान् जयेन्नित्यमतन्द्रित: । अग्नीश्र ब्राह्माणांश्चार्चेद् देवता: प्रणमेत च
vyāsa uvāca | evam etān yogadoṣān jayet nityam atandritaḥ | agnīṃś ca brāhmaṇāṃś cārcet devatāḥ praṇamet ca | sattvasaṃsevanād dhīro nidrām ucchettum arhati |
Vyāsa dit : «Ainsi, sans négligence, qu’on triomphe sans cesse de ces défauts qui entravent le yoga. Qu’on rende un culte au feu sacré (Agni), qu’on honore les brāhmaṇas, et qu’on s’incline aussi devant les divinités. En cultivant le sattva, l’homme ferme devient apte à trancher le sommeil (la torpeur de la paresse).»
व्यास उवाच
A practitioner should remain vigilant and overcome obstacles to yoga—especially negligence and torpor—by cultivating sattva (clarity and balance), while also sustaining dharmic supports such as honoring the sacred fire, respecting brāhmaṇas, and offering reverence to the deities.
In Śānti Parva’s instructional discourse, Vyāsa continues giving practical guidance for inner discipline: he urges constant alertness, the conquest of yoga-impeding faults, and the integration of spiritual practice with traditional acts of reverence and ritual respect.
