Āśrama-dharma and Brahmacarya: Śuka’s Inquiry on Karma and Tyāga (शुक-प्रश्नः कर्मत्यागविवेकश्च)
सावित्री कुण्डले दिव्ये शरीरं जनमेजय: । ब्राह्मणार्थे परित्यज्य जग्मतुर्लोकमुत्तमम्
sāvitrī kuṇḍale divye śarīraṃ janamejayaḥ | brāhmaṇārthe parityajya jagmatur lokam uttamam ||
Vyāsa dit : «Sāvitrī offrit deux boucles d’oreilles divines, et le roi Janamejaya, pour un brāhmaṇa, renonça jusqu’à son propre corps et s’en alla. Par ces dons et ce sacrifice sans égoïsme, tous deux atteignirent le séjour suprême.»
व्यास उवाच
Selfless giving (dāna) and complete renunciation (tyāga), especially when done for a worthy cause such as supporting a brāhmaṇa, are presented as powerful dharmic acts that lead to the highest spiritual reward.
Vyāsa cites two exemplary deeds: Sāvitrī donates a pair of divine earrings, and King Janamejaya gives up his own life/body for a brāhmaṇa’s sake; as a result, both are said to attain the supreme realm.
