मृत्यु-काल-प्रबोधनम् (Instruction on Mortality, Time, and Truth) — Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva 169

सर्वतः पापदर्शी च नास्तिको वेदनिन्दक: । सम्प्रकीर्णेन्द्रियो लोके यः काम॑ निरतश्चरेत्‌

sarvataḥ pāpadarśī ca nāstiko vedanindakaḥ | samprakīrṇendriyo loke yaḥ kāmaṃ nirataś caret ||

Bhīṣma dit : «Qu’on ne conclue jamais d’alliance avec un homme dont le regard ne voit partout que le péché—un impie qui outrage le Veda—qui laisse ses sens se déchaîner et erre dans le monde poussé par le désir. Sans retenue ni révérence, il devient infidèle en amitié et dangereux en accord; aussi n’est-il digne d’aucun pacte. De même, celui qui traque sans cesse les fautes d’autrui n’est pas digne d’alliance. À présent, je décrirai ceux qui y sont aptes—écoutez.»
