The Nature, Forms, and Function of Daṇḍa

कुलप्रकृतिदेशानां धर्मज्ञान्‌ मृदुभाषिण: । मध्ये वयसि निर्दोषान्‌ हिते युक्तानविक्लवान्‌

kulaprakṛtideśānāṁ dharmajñān mṛdubhāṣiṇaḥ | madhye vayasi nirdoṣān hite yuktān aviklavan |

Bhishma dit : Le roi ne doit confier toutes ses affaires qu’à ceux qui comprennent les devoirs et les lois coutumières de la lignée, du tempérament et du pays ; à ceux dont la parole est douce ; dont la conduite, dans la jeunesse, fut sans tache ; et qui s’attachent à ce qui est bénéfique sans être ébranlés par la peur ni par l’agitation. De tels hommes—dénués d’avidité, bien formés, maîtres d’eux-mêmes, fermes dans le dharma et capables de protéger à la fois la droiture et la prospérité matérielle—sont dignes d’être employés en toute tâche royale.
