रणभूमिवर्णनम् — Devāsuropama-yuddha and the ‘River’ Metaphor of the Battlefield

गौतमो दक्षिणे पाश्वे शकैश्न यवनै: सह । अश्वत्थामा पृष्ठतो5भूत्‌ काम्बोजै: परिवारित:

sañjaya uvāca | gautamo dakṣiṇe pārśve śakaiś ca yavanaiḥ saha | aśvatthāmā pṛṣṭhato 'bhūt kāmbojaiḥ parivāritaḥ ||

Sañjaya dit : Sur le flanc droit se tenait Gautama (Kṛpācārya) avec les Śakas et les Yavanas ; et à l’arrière se tenait Aśvatthāmā, entouré des Kāmbojas. Le vers décrit l’ordonnance de bataille des Kaurava, montrant comment des chefs aguerris et des contingents alliés furent placés pour protéger la formation : image d’une guerre réglée et calculée, où la loyauté au camp choisi et le devoir stratégique l’emportent sur l’aisance personnelle, tandis que se poursuit la tragédie morale d’un conflit entre parents.
