Adhyāya 6: Śibira-dvāra-sthita Bhūta-varṇana and Aśvatthāmā’s Śaraṇāgati to Mahādeva

इस प्रकार श्रीमह्ाभारत सौप्तिकपर्वमें अश्वत्थामाका प्रयाणविषयक पाँचवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ

bāhubhiḥ svāyataiḥ pīnair nānā-praharaṇodyataiḥ | baddhājad-mahāsarpa-jvālā-mālākulānanam ||

Sañjaya dit : Là, il aperçut un être immense et merveilleux, rayonnant comme le soleil et la lune, dressé en gardien du seuil et barrant l’entrée. À sa seule vue, les poils se hérissaient. Ce grand personnage portait une peau ruisselante de sang, se drapait d’une peau d’antilope noire, et des serpents lui servaient de fil sacré (yajñopavīta). Ses bras énormes et puissants, levés, prêts à frapper, tenaient des armes de toutes sortes ; à la place des bracelets, de grands serpents y étaient noués. Sa bouche béante semblait emplie de guirlandes de flammes. Son visage, rendu plus effroyable encore par des crocs saillants, et paré de milliers d’yeux étranges, obstruait le passage, comme l’incarnation de la terreur morale et des conséquences cosmiques qui suivent la violence et la vengeance commises dans la nuit.
