अध्याय ९ — कर्णस्य प्रहारः, योधयुग्मनियोजनम्, शैनेय-कैकेययोर्युद्धविन्यासः
स च सर्पमुखो दिव्यो महेषुप्रवरस्तदा । व्यर्थ: कथं समभवत् तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय,संजय! जिस समय शूरवीर महारथी पाण्डव पानीकी धारा बरसानेवाले बादलोंके समान स्वयं ही बाणोंकी वृष्टि करते हुए आगे बढ़ने लगे, उस समय महान् बाणोंमें सर्वश्रेष्ठ दिव्य सर्पमुख बाण व्यर्थ कैसे हो गया? यह मुझे बताओ
sa ca sarpamukho divyo maheṣupravaraḥ tadā | vyarthaḥ kathaṁ samabhavat tan mamācakṣva sañjaya ||
Vaiśampāyana dit : «Et comment, en cet instant, cette flèche divine “au visage de serpent”, la plus éminente parmi les grands traits, devint-elle vaine ? Dis-le-moi, Sañjaya. Lorsque le héros Pāṇḍava, puissant combattant de char, s’avança en déversant une pluie de flèches comme des nuées gorgées d’eau, par quelle cause cette arme suprême faillit-elle ?»
