Aśvatthāman’s Arrow-Screen and the Confrontation with Yudhiṣṭhira (द्रौणि–युधिष्ठिर-संग्रामः)
ममैष प्रथम: कल्पो निधने स्वर्गमिच्छत: । मैं अस्त्र-शस्त्रोंद्वारा किये जानेवाले युद्धमें अपने प्राणोंका परित्याग करूँ, यही मेरे लिये प्रथम श्रेणीका कार्य है; क्योंकि मैं मृत्युके पश्चात् स्वर्ग पानेकी अभिलाषा रखता हूँ ।। ४४ $ई || सो<यं प्रिय: सखा चास्मि धार्तराष्ट्रस्य धीमत:,यथा चामित्रवत् सर्व त्वमस्मासु प्रवर्तसे । मैं बुद्धिमान दुर्योधनका प्रिय मित्र हूँ। अतः मेरे पास जो कुछ धन-वैभव है, वह और मेरे प्राण भी उसीके लिये हैं। परंतु पापदेशमें उत्पन्न हुए शल्य! यह स्पष्ट जान पड़ता है कि पाण्डवोंने तुम्हें हमारा भेद लेनेके लिये ही यहाँ रख छोड़ा है; क्योंकि तुम हमारे साथ शत्रुके समान ही सारा बर्ताव कर रहे हो
mamaiṣa prathamaḥ kalpo nidhane svargamicchataḥ | so 'yaṃ priyaḥ sakhā cāsmi dhārtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ | yathā cāmitravat sarvaṃ tvam asmāsu pravartase ||
