As a colophon, the verse primarily teaches how the epic frames events: it marks the end of a chapter and situates the reader within a morally weighty wartime context (the night-battle and Ghaṭotkaca’s slaying), while invoking Vyāsa’s authority to underscore the seriousness of the narrative and its ethical implications.
The text is concluding a chapter in the Droṇa Parva. It specifies that this chapter belongs to the Ghaṭotkacavadha section and occurs in the context of the night-battle, and that the chapter’s subject is Vyāsa’s words.
