Bhīṣma’s request for water; Arjuna’s Parjanya-astra; counsel to Duryodhana on reconciliation
महत्या सेनया युक्ता नानादेशसमुत्थया । भीष्मस्य समरे राजन् प्रार्थयाना महद् यश:,नरेश्वर! इनके साथ अनेक देशोंसे आयी हुई विशाल सेना मौजूद थी। ये समरभूमिमें भीष्मके महान् यशकी रक्षा करना चाहते थे
mahatyā senayā yuktā nānādeśa-samutthayā | bhīṣmasya samare rājan prārthayānā mahad yaśaḥ ||
Ô roi, ils étaient appuyés par une vaste armée venue de contrées diverses. Dans cette bataille, ils voulaient maintenir et protéger la grande renommée de Bhīṣma, afin que son prestige ne fût pas amoindri au milieu du fracas des armes.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights a key wartime value in the epic: collective loyalty to a revered leader and the protection of his yaśas (honor/renown). It reflects the kṣatriya concern that fame and reputation are preserved through steadfast support in battle.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Bhīṣma is backed by a massive, multi-regional force. Those troops are portrayed as rallying around Bhīṣma in the battlefield, intent on sustaining his great reputation during the conflict.
