भीष्मस्य अप्रतिमपराक्रमः — शिखण्डिपुरस्कृतः प्रहारः
Bhīṣma’s unmatched momentum and the assault with Śikhaṇḍin in the lead
विराटद्रुपदौ वृद्धौ समेतावरिमर्दनौ । अश्रृत्थामा ततः क्रुद्धो वारयामास भारत
virāṭa-drupadau vṛddhau sametāv ari-mardanau | aśvatthāmā tataḥ kruddho vārayāmāsa bhārata ||
Sañjaya dit : Ô Bhārata, les vieux rois Virāṭa et Drupada — tous deux renommés pour broyer l’ennemi — s’avancèrent ensemble. Alors Aśvatthāmā, enflammé de colère, se porta à leur rencontre pour les arrêter et les contenir. Le vers montre comment la fureur du champ de bataille transforme les rencontres en épreuves de force, et comment même les anciens sont entraînés dans le péril malgré le poids moral de l’âge et du rang.
