Rājagṛhe Magadheśvarasya yuddhāhvānam — Arjunena saṃyamaḥ
The Rājagṛha Challenge and Arjuna’s Restraint
As a colophon, the verse primarily teaches textual discipline: it frames the narrative as part of a larger dharmic composition, emphasizing that episodes of conflict and defeat are situated within an ordered epic tradition and are to be understood in relation to the broader moral vision of the Mahābhārata.
The speaker Vaiśaṃpāyana announces the completion of the eighty-second chapter, whose topic is the defeat of the king of Madra, within the Anugītā portion of the Aśvamedhika Parva—functioning as an end-of-chapter marker rather than new story action.
