Adhyāya 57: Tapas–Dāna Phala
On the Fruits of Austerity and Giving
कुशिक बोले--भगवन्! भृगुश्रेष्ठी मैं आपके निकट उसी प्रकार रहा हूँ, जैसे कोई प्रज्वलित अग्निके बीचमें खड़ा हो। उस अवस्थामें रहकर भी मैं जलकर भस्म नहीं हुआ, यही मेरे लिये बहुत बड़ी बात है। भृगुनन्दन! यही मैंने महान् वर प्राप्त कर लिया ।।
Kuśika uvāca—bhagavan! bhṛguśreṣṭhin, ahaṃ tava nikaṭe tathā avatiṣṭhe yathā kaścid dīptāgnimadhye tiṣṭhet. tām avasthāṃ prāpya api na dagdhaḥ na ca bhasmībhūtaḥ—etad eva mama mahad āścaryam. bhṛgunandana! etad eva mayā mahān varaḥ prāptaḥ. yat prīto ’si mayā, brahman, kulaṃ trātaṃ ca me ’nagha; eṣa me ’nugraho vipra, jīvite ca prayojanam. niṣpāpa brahmarṣe! bhavān yat prasannaḥ, yat ca mama kulaṃ nāśāt trātavān—etad eva mayi tava guruḥ anugrahaḥ; etāvatā eva mama jīvitasyārthaḥ saṃpannaḥ.
Kuśika dit : «Vénérable seigneur, le meilleur des Bhṛgu, je suis demeuré près de toi comme un homme qui se tiendrait au milieu d’un brasier. Et pourtant je n’ai pas été réduit en cendres : cela seul est pour moi un grand prodige. Ô descendant de Bhṛgu, c’est là le grand don que j’ai obtenu. Que tu sois satisfait de moi, ô brahmane, et que tu aies sauvé ma lignée de la destruction : telle est ta puissante grâce envers moi. Par cela seul, ô Brahmarṣi sans faute, le but même de ma vie est accompli.»
