Mataṅga–Śakra Dialogue on Tapas, Status, and Moral Qualities
विश्वामित्र: स्थूलशिरा: संवर्त: प्रमतिर्दम: । बृहस्पत्युशनोव्यासाश्ष्यवन: काश्यपो ध्रुव:
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
viśvāmitraḥ sthūlaśirāḥ saṃvartaḥ pramatir damaḥ |
bṛhaspaty-uśano-vyāsaś chyavanaḥ kāśyapo dhruvaḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana dit : « (Parmi ces grands sages se trouvent) Viśvāmitra, Sthūlaśiras, Saṃvarta, Pramati, Dama, Bṛhaspati, Uśanas (Śukra), Vyāsa, Cyavana, Kāśyapa et Dhruva. » Dans ce passage, le récit poursuit l’énumération révérencieuse de ṛṣis faisant autorité, dont la vie et l’enseignement sont tenus pour des modèles éthiques et des sources de dharma, afin d’ancrer la leçon à venir dans le poids d’une lignée sacrée.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse reinforces dharma through appeal to recognized authorities: by naming revered ṛṣis and teachers, the text signals that the forthcoming norms and counsel stand within an established lineage of wisdom and disciplined living.
Vaiśampāyana continues an enumeration of eminent sages, effectively creating a roll-call of respected figures whose presence and reputation authenticate the discourse and frame it as rooted in inherited sacred knowledge.
