Conduct of the Virtuous Wife
इति वेदोक्तमृषिभि: पुरस्तात् परिकल्पितम् | इदानीं चैव न: कृत्यं पुरस्ताच्च परिश्रुतम्
iti vedoktam ṛṣibhiḥ purastāt parikalpitam | idānīṃ caiva naḥ kṛtyaṃ purastāc ca pariśrutam ||
«Ainsi cela fut-il établi dès l’antiquité par les voyants, conformément au Veda. Nous aussi l’avons entendu depuis les temps anciens, et aujourd’hui encore il est de notre devoir d’accomplir cette injonction védique.»
व्यास उवाच
That dharma is grounded in Vedic injunctions and the ancient seers’ established practice; what has been transmitted and heard from olden times remains binding as present duty.
Vyāsa affirms that a certain rule of conduct being discussed is not novel: it was prescribed long ago by ṛṣis in line with the Veda, is well-known by tradition, and therefore must be followed now as an obligation.
