Praise of the ‘Mental Tīrtha’ and the Marks of Purity
Sustained Vedic worship (offering into Agni) combined with rigorous self-discipline and fasting is presented as a powerful dharmic practice that yields great spiritual merit and leads to honor in devaloka.
In Bhishma’s instruction on dharma and religious observances, he describes the reward for a practitioner who maintains agnihotra-like offerings for a year while eating only once every twenty-seventh day, emphasizing the exalted result of such austerity.
