Nahūṣa Episode and the Commendation of Lamp-Gifting and Household Offerings
एवमस्त्विति संद्ृष्टा: प्रत्यूचुस्तं नराधिप । कुन्तीनंदन! नरेश्वर! पितामह ब्रह्माका यह कथन सुनकर सब देवता हर्षसे खिल उठे और बोले--'भगवन्! ऐसा ही हो”
evam astv iti saṃdṛṣṭāḥ pratyūcus taṃ narādhipa | kuntīnandana nareśvara | pitāmaha brahmā ca yaḥ kathanaṃ śrutvā sarve devā harṣeṇa khilībhūya ūcuḥ—“bhagavan, evaṃ eva bhavatu” ||
Bhīṣma dit : «Qu’il en soit ainsi.» L’ayant considéré avec approbation, ils lui répondirent, ô roi — ô fils de Kuntī, ô seigneur des hommes. Entendant cette parole du Grand Aïeul et de Brahmā, tous les dieux s’épanouirent de joie et déclarèrent : «Ô Bienheureux, qu’il en soit exactement ainsi !»
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights the idea of dharma receiving divine confirmation: when a righteous or authoritative pronouncement is made (by revered figures like the Grandsire and Brahmā), the gods affirm it with “evam astu” (“so be it”), underscoring that moral order is supported by cosmic assent.
Bhīṣma narrates that, upon hearing the statement attributed to the Grandsire and Brahmā, the assembled gods rejoice and respond in agreement, formally ratifying the declaration with the blessing “Let it be so.”
