King Duḥṣanta’s Entry into the Forest Hunt
प्रह्मदशिष्यो नग्नजित् सुबलश्चाभवत् ततः । तस्य प्रजा धर्महन्त्री जज्ञे देवप्रकोपनात्,प्रहादका शिष्य नग्नजित् राजा सुबलके रूपमें प्रकट हुआ। देवताओंके कोपसे उसकी संतति (शकुनि) धर्मका नाश करनेवाली हुई। गान्धारराज सुबलका पुत्र शकुनि एवं सौबल नामसे विख्यात हुआ तथा उनकी पुत्री गान्धारी दुर्योधनकी माता थी। ये दोनों भाई-बहिन अर्थशास्त्रके ज्ञानमें निपुण थे
Brahmadaśiṣyo Nagnajit Subalaś cābhavat tataḥ | tasya prajā dharmahantrī jajñe devaprakopanāt ||
Dāśa dit : «Ensuite, Nagnajit apparut comme disciple dans la lignée de Brahmadaśa, puis Subala naquit. Mais, sous l’effet de la colère des dieux, la descendance de Subala devint celle qui détruirait le dharma.»
दाश उवाच
The verse links moral disorder with consequences across generations: divine displeasure (devaprakopa) can manifest as a lineage inclined to undermine dharma, emphasizing responsibility, restraint, and the long reach of ethical causality.
A genealogical sequence is being narrated: after Nagnajit in the Brahmadaśa line, Subala arises; then the text remarks that Subala’s progeny becomes ‘dharma-destroying’ due to the gods’ anger, foreshadowing later conflicts associated with that line.
