Ādi-parva Adhyāya 3 — Janamejaya’s Rite, Dhaumya’s Parīkṣā, and Uttanka’s Kuṇḍala Quest (सर्पसत्रप्रस्तावना–गुरुपरीक्षा–उत्तङ्कोपाख्यान)
स तामुवाचैते कुण्डले गुर्वर्थ मे भिक्षिते दातुरमहसीति । सा प्रीता तेन तस्य सद्भावेन पात्रमयमनतिक्रमणीयश्नेति मत्वा ते कुण्डलेडवमुच्यास्मै प्रायच्छदाह तक्षको नागराज: सुभशं प्रार्थयत्यप्रमत्तो नेतुमरहसीति,उत्तंकने महारानीसे कहा--'देवि! मैंने गुरुक लिये आपके दोनों कुण्डलोंकी याचना की है। वे ही मुझे दे दें।” महारानी उत्तंकके उस सद्भाव (गुरुभक्ति)-से बहुत प्रसन्न हुईं। उन्होंने यह सोचकर कि ये सुपात्र ब्राह्मण हैं, इन्हें निराश नहीं लौटाना चाहिये/--अपने दोनों कुण्डल स्वयं उतारकर उन्हें दे दिये और उनसे कहा--“ब्रह्मन! नागराज तक्षक इन कुण्डलोंको पानेके लिये बहुत प्रयत्नशील हैं। अतः आपको सावधान होकर इन्हें ले जाना चाहिये!
sa tām uvāca—ete kuṇḍale gurv-arthaṃ me bhikṣite dātum arhasi iti | sā prītā tena tasya sad-bhāvena pātram ayam anatikramaṇīyaḥ iti matvā te kuṇḍale udvamuccyāsmai prāyacchad āha—takṣako nāgarājaḥ subhṛśaṃ prārthayaty apramatto netum arhasi iti |
Il lui dit : «Ces deux boucles d’oreilles, je les ai demandées pour l’œuvre de mon maître ; vous devez me les donner.» La reine, réjouie par sa sincère dévotion et sa bonne intention, le jugea digne et estima qu’il ne fallait pas le renvoyer déçu. Elle ôta elle-même les boucles d’oreilles et les lui remit, en l’avertissant : «Ô brāhmane, le roi des serpents Takṣaka convoite ardemment ces boucles ; emporte-les donc avec une vigilance extrême.»
