The Birth of Kṛpa and Kṛpī; Kṛpa’s Attainment of Astras
ātmano mṛgaśāpena jānann upahatāṃ kriyām | so 'bravīd vijane kuntīṃ dharmapatnīṃ yaśasvinīm | apatyotpādane yatnam āpadi tvaṃ samarthaya |
The verse frames progeny as a dharmic responsibility tied to lineage and royal duty, and it introduces the idea that in a genuine emergency (āpadi) extraordinary measures may be sought—yet still within the language of dharma (addressing Kuntī as dharmapatnī and asking for her sanctioned support).
Pāṇḍu, aware that the deer-related curse has ruined his ability to father children, privately asks Kuntī to support the necessary means for producing offspring, setting up the later recourse to divine begetting through Kuntī’s boon/mantra.
