The Brāhmaṇas’ Wives Blessed (Brāhmaṇa-patnī-prasāda) — Ritualism Humbled by Bhakti
नासां द्विजातिसंस्कारो न निवासो गुरावपि । न तपो नात्ममीमांसा न शौचं न क्रिया: शुभा: ॥ ४३ ॥ तथापि ह्युत्तम:श्लोके कृष्णे योगेश्वरेश्वरे । भक्तिर्दृढा न चास्माकं संस्कारादिमतामपि ॥ ४४ ॥
nāsāṁ dvijāti-saṁskāro na nivāso gurāv api na tapo nātma-mīmāṁsā na śaucaṁ na kriyāḥ śubhāḥ
Et pourtant, elles ont une bhakti inébranlable envers Śrī Kṛṣṇa, Uttamaḥśloka, le Seigneur suprême de tous les maîtres du yoga ; tandis que nous, malgré les saṁskāra et toutes ces pratiques, n’avons pas une telle dévotion.
According to Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī, the husbands were not aware that their wives had occasionally associated with residents of Vṛndāvana, such as the flower ladies, and had heard about the beauty and qualities of Kṛṣṇa. The brāhmaṇas were astonished at their wives’ loving devotion for Lord Kṛṣṇa, not realizing that this devotion had developed as a result of hearing and chanting about the Lord in the association of His pure devotees.
This verse states that even without formal saṁskāras, guru-residence, austerity, or ritual purity, one can have firm devotion to Kṛṣṇa—while those qualified in rituals may still lack steady bhakti.
After refusing to help Kṛṣṇa’s cowherd boys due to attachment to sacrifice and social rules, they later recognized that their own wives—though seemingly untrained—had genuine, unwavering devotion to Kṛṣṇa, exposing the brāhmaṇas’ spiritual deficiency.
Prioritize sincere devotion and remembrance of God over mere external religiosity—use practices and learning to support love of Kṛṣṇa, not to replace it with pride or formalism.
