Adhyāya 88 — निर्वाणदीक्षाकथनं
Teaching of the Nirvāṇa-Initiation
Lord Agni (in discourse to sage Vasiṣṭha, as typical for Agni Purana’s instructional sections)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Tantra","secondary_vidya":"Mantra","practical_application":"Mantra discharge (visarga), circularization (vṛttulī-karaṇa), and homa using Pāśāstra/Kalāstra with ghee offerings—an applied ritual protocol for binding-control and purification.","sutra_style":false}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Mantra","entry_title":"Kalā-pāśa mantra with visarga, vṛttulī-karaṇa, and Kalāstra-homa","lookup_keywords":["oṃ hāṃ","kalā-pāśa","haḥ hūṃ phaṭ","vṛttulī-karaṇa","kalāstra-homa"],"quick_summary":"Recite the specified Kalā-pāśa mantra, 'discharge' it and form it into a protective circle, apply the Pāśāstra as taught, then perform ghee oblations using the Kalāstra as the operative ritual force."}
Weapon Type: Astra (Pāśāstra; Kalāstra)
Concept: Mantra is not merely recited but 'shaped' (ākāra) into a circle and projected; ritual action externalizes inner intention, converting sound (śabda) into protective/transformative force.
Application: For structured practice, treat mantra as a sequence: sound → projection → boundary formation → offering; this builds concentration and a clear sense of ritual causality.
Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi (Mantra-tantra and Homa-vidhi: ritual use of astras/mantras)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: vira
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A homa altar scene: the practitioner recites 'oṃ hāṃ ... haḥ hūṃ phaṭ', projects the mantra outward, a glowing circular boundary forms around the altar, then ghee is poured into the fire with the Kalāstra visualized as a radiant weapon-force above the flames.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, bright stylized fire altar, circular halo-ring around the ritual space, golden Devanāgarī mantra syllables arcing into a circle, practitioner holding sruc/ladle, Kalāstra depicted as a radiant emblem above flames, earthy palette and bold contours.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, central homa fire with heavy gold foil on the circular protective ring and mantra akṣaras, ornate ladle brimming with ghee, Kalāstra as jeweled radiant symbol, symmetrical devotional composition.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, clear instructional depiction of vṛttulī-karaṇa: a drawn circle around altar, arrows showing mantra projection, labeled utensils (śruva/sruc), gentle colors and precise detailing.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, refined ritual interior with patterned carpets, a luminous circle enclosing the altar, delicate flames, practitioner mid-gesture, calligraphic mantra ribbon in the air, Kalāstra hovering like a radiant insignia."}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"devotional","suggested_raga":"Hamsadhwani","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: śāntyatītakalāpāśāya = śānti + atīta + kalā + pāśāya; vartulīkṛtya is a nāmadhātu/denominative gerund; pāśānastreṇa = pāśāna-astreṇa; kalāstreṇaiva = kalā-astreṇa + eva.
Related Themes: Agni Purana 88 (pūrvavat: earlier Pāśāstra/Kalāstra instructions; homa sequence)
It teaches the practical deployment of astra-mantras—discharging the Pāśāstra, forming a protective circle (vartulīkaraṇa), and then performing homa specifically with the Kalāstra using ghee oblations.
It preserves a highly technical ritual protocol—complete with bīja syllables, astra-mantra mechanics, and homa steps—showing the Agni Purana’s coverage of specialized mantra-tantra praxis alongside broader dharma and lore.
By combining protective astra-mantras with ghee offerings, the rite is framed as a means of purification and safeguarding—binding or restraining obstructive forces (pāśa) while stabilizing the ritual field through circular protection.
