Chapter 83 — निर्वाणदीक्षाकथनम्
Description of the Nirvāṇa Initiation
Lord Agni (in instruction to Sage Vasiṣṭha, typical Agni Purāṇa dialogue frame)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Tantra","secondary_vidya":"Mantra","practical_application":"Adhva-śodhana (purification of the mantra-cosmos mapped as varṇa/bhuvana/kāla) as a preparatory rite in pūjā/dīkṣā to stabilize mantra-siddhi and remove subtle obstacles.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Mantra","entry_title":"Adhva-śodhana with hāṃ for Varṇādhvan–Bhuvanādhvan–Kālādhvan","lookup_keywords":["adhva-śodhana","varṇādhvan","bhuvanādhvan","kālādhvan","hāṃ bīja"],"quick_summary":"The verse gives a compact mantra-formula for purifying three ‘paths’ (phonemic, cosmic planes, and time) using the bīja hāṃ, treating them as a subtle continuum (sūtra) to be ritually cleansed."}
Concept: The cosmos and the practitioner are linked by ‘adhvans’ (structured continua); mantra purifies these pathways at the level of sound, world-order, and time.
Application: Use as a mental-ritual mapping: cleanse speech (varṇa), experience-world (bhuvana), and temporal flow (kāla) before nyāsa/japa to reduce distraction and ritual impurity.
Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi / Mantra-vidya (Tantric purification of the adhvan-paths)
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A guru-priest seated before a ritual diagram, visualizing three luminous pathways—letters, worlds, and time—being washed in a stream of the bīja hāṃ, all threaded on a subtle sūtra.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala temple mural style, flat bold colors, guru in white cloth before a yantra, three concentric bands labeled varṇa/bhuvana/kāla as glowing paths, bīja ‘हां’ repeated as golden glyphs, serene sanctum ambience.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, central seated guru with ornate halo, gold-leaf glyphs ‘हां’ forming three arcs around him, stylized lotus pedestal, rich reds and greens, embossed gold detailing for the ‘paths’.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting style, fine linework, instructional composition: three labeled bands (phonemes, worlds, time) connected by a thin ‘sūtra’ line, guru gesturing in teaching mudrā, soft pastel palette.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, courtly atelier look: a yogic preceptor in a pavilion, delicate calligraphy ‘हां’ floating along three ribbons (sound/world/time), precise detailing, subdued jewel tones."}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"contemplative","suggested_raga":"Bhairav","pace":"slow","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: नमो → नमः (visarga before voiced consonant); वर्णाध्वने/भवनाध्वने/कालाध्वने resolved as वर्ण-अध्वने etc.; शोध्याध्वानं resolved as शोध्य-अध्वानम्.
Related Themes: Agni Purana 83 (Pūjā-vidhi/Mantra-tantra: adhva-śodhana, nyāsa, avaguṇṭhana)
It teaches adhvan-śodhana: purifying three tantric ‘paths’—phonemes (varṇa), worlds/levels (bhavana/bhuvana), and time (kāla)—by offering salutations with the bīja “hāṃ” (often applied in nyāsa and mantra-empowerment).
Alongside narrative and dharma material, the Agni Purāṇa preserves applied ritual technology from mantra-śāstra—classification of cosmological series (adhvans) and practical purification procedures used in worship, consecration, and internal meditation.
By ritually ‘cleansing’ the foundational structures of speech, existence, and time through mantra-salutation, the practitioner removes subtle impurities/obstacles and prepares the body-mind and ritual field for effective worship and higher realization.
