Chapter 56 — दिक्पालयागकथनम्
Account of the Worship of the Guardians of the Directions

Bhagavan (Lord Agni as narrator in the Agni Purana dialogue tradition)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Shilpa","secondary_vidya":"Tantra","practical_application":"Conceptual mapping used in pratimā-pratiṣṭhā: treating the icon as Puruṣa (conscious principle) and the pedestal/base (piṇḍikā) as Prakṛti, to guide installation, nyāsa, and consecration logic.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Definition","entry_title":"Pratiṣṭhā-pañcaka and Puruṣa–Prakṛti mapping in icon-installation","lookup_keywords":["pratiṣṭhā-pañcaka","pratimā puruṣa","piṇḍikā prakṛti","lakṣmī pratiṣṭhā","yogaka"],"quick_summary":"Defines a fivefold consecration framework and a metaphysical correspondence: icon = Puruṣa, pedestal = Prakṛti, consecration = Lakṣmī; their union is termed Yogaka, grounding ritual installation in Sāṃkhya-like categories."}
Concept: Puruṣa–Prakṛti ontology applied to ritual technology: the icon is treated as conscious principle, the base as material principle; consecration mediates their union.
Application: During pratiṣṭhā, the officiant aligns ritual acts (nyāsa, āvāhana, prāṇa-pratiṣṭhā) with this mapping to justify and stabilize the ‘living presence’ in the icon.

Sandhi Resolution Notes: ity ādi- → iti ādi-; pañcapañcāśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ = pañca-pañcāśattamaḥ adhyāyaḥ; ṣaṭpañcāśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ = ṣaṭ-pañcāśattamaḥ adhyāyaḥ; bhagavānuvāca = bhagavān uvāca; pratimātmā = pratimā-ātmā; yogakastayoḥ = yogakaḥ tayoḥ.

It introduces the pratiṣṭhā-pañcaka (fivefold framework for consecration/installation) and gives a technical mapping used in icon-installation: the pratimā embodies Puruṣa, the piṇḍikā corresponds to Prakṛti, and consecration is linked with Lakṣmī; their union is termed yogaka.
By shifting from chapter colophons into a specialized ritual-technical register—defining installation categories, icon/pedestal metaphysics, and introducing Dikpāla worship—it demonstrates how the Agni Purāṇa compiles practical temple science (vāstu, pratimā-lakṣaṇa, pratiṣṭhā-vidhi) alongside theology.
Correct consecration aligns the icon with cosmic principles (Puruṣa–Prakṛti) and invokes Lakṣmī-like auspiciousness; ritually, it is presented as a means to stabilize divine presence in a shrine and thereby support purification, prosperity, and merit through properly performed worship.
