Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Dharmashastra","secondary_vidya":"Mantra","practical_application":"Clarifies social-genealogical and ritual office terminology (lineage, gotra, kula; roles like ācārya and ādeṣṭā) for correct identification in rites, social records, and dharmic discourse.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Definition","entry_title":"Brahmavarga: lineage terms and ritual functionaries (vaṃśa, gotra, ācārya, ādeṣṭā)","lookup_keywords":["vaṃśa","anvavāya","gotra","ācārya","ādeṣṭā"],"quick_summary":"Defines key kinship and pedigree terms and distinguishes ritual roles: the ācārya as mantra-explainer/teacher and the ādeṣṭā as the directing officiant in sacrifice, characterized by vow-observance."}
Concept: Dharma requires correct categories: knowing one’s lineage identifiers (vaṃśa/gotra/kula) and the proper ritual roles (ācārya/ādeṣṭā) within yajña.
Application: In śrauta/smārta contexts, use these definitions to assign duties, interpret ritual manuals, and maintain accurate genealogical/ritual records.

Related Themes: Agni Purana 363 (Nṛvarga conclusion); Agni Purana 364 (Brahmavarga opening definitions; subsequent brahminical classifications)
It defines technical terms used in social-genealogical identification (vaṃśa, gotra, kula, abhijana-anvaya) and specifies ritual functionaries—especially the ācārya as mantra-expositor and the ādeṣṭā as the director who issues procedural instructions during an adhvara (sacrifice).
By cataloging precise definitions for kinship/pedigree and priestly office, it functions like a compact lexicon of dharma- and ritual-terminology—one of the Agni Purana’s hallmark “handbook” features across governance, social order, and Vedic practice.
It frames ritual authority as grounded in disciplined conduct (vrata) and correct mantra-understanding; right performance under qualified guidance is implied to safeguard purity of sacrifice and thereby support merit (puṇya) and social-religious order (dharma).
