Chapter 13 — कुरुपाण्डवोत्पत्त्यादिकथनं

Narration of the Origin of the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas, and Related Matters

Alamkara Type: Anuprāsa (light alliteration in Bhārata–bhūbhāra); itihāsa-prastāvanā convention

Concept: Divine providence (Viṣṇu) operates through human agency (nimitta-kāraṇa); the epic war is framed as restoration of dharma and relief of Earth’s burden.

Application: Read/recite Bhārata as ethical instruction: act as a nimitta for dharma, without ego of doership, aligning personal duty with cosmic order.

FAQs

This verse primarily inaugurates an Itihāsa narrative section: Agni announces an exposition of the Bhārata characterized by Kṛṣṇa’s māhātmya, framing the war-story as a divine strategy to remove the earth’s burden rather than teaching a specific ritual procedure.

By incorporating and summarizing major cultural corpora like the Mahābhārata/Harivaṃśa within a Purāṇic framework, the Agni Purāṇa functions as a compendium—indexing sacred history (itihāsa), theology (Kṛṣṇa/Viṣṇu), and cosmological purpose (bhū-bhāra-haraṇa) alongside its other technical disciplines.

The verse presents the Mahābhārata as a divinely purposed event: Viṣṇu’s removal of the earth’s burden through the Pāṇḍavas underscores dharma’s restoration and encourages hearing/remembering Kṛṣṇa’s greatness as spiritually purifying and dharma-affirming.
