पप्रच्छ ताञ्शिवो देवान् क्रमात्त्वत्प्राप्तिहेतवे । प्रत्युत्तरं ददुस्ते तु प्रत्येकं च यथोचितम्
papraccha tāñśivo devān kramāttvatprāptihetave | pratyuttaraṃ daduste tu pratyekaṃ ca yathocitam
Luego Śiva interrogó a aquellos dioses, uno tras otro y en orden, buscando el medio para alcanzar la meta deseada; y cada cual, a su turno, dio una respuesta adecuada a su entendimiento y rango.

It highlights that liberation or true attainment is approached through a discerned “means” (upāya), and that seekers may receive different guidance according to capacity—yet the intent is the same: reaching the supreme reality, Śiva as Pati.
By emphasizing inquiry into the proper method of attainment, it supports the Purāṇic framework where Saguna worship—especially Śiva-linga worship with mantra and devotion—functions as an accessible, fitting means for many aspirants.
The verse points to seeking an appropriate sādhana; in Shaiva practice this commonly culminates in mantra-japa (notably the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), along with disciplined worship such as abhiṣeka and inner meditation on Śiva.
