Sukta 47

Sukta 8.47

Devata

Ādityas (Varuṇa, Mitra, and the Āditya group).

Inside Sukta 47

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A strong opening magnifies the ‘great help’ of Varuṇa and Mitra for the generous worshipper and asks the Ādityas to guard against crooked hostility and any reach of evil.

  2. Development

The hymn broadens from protection to positive establishment—requesting peace, refuge, goodness, untroubledness, and a firmly set, “threefold” protection to be manifested within the community of worshippers.

  3. Climax

The central petition crystallizes: whatever constitutes true shelter and well-being, the gods are asked to ‘set it out’ within us—making protection not only external but inwardly rooted.

  4. Where it settles

It ends in a victorious, cleansing note—‘today we have conquered’ and become ‘without fault’—and calls on Dawn to drive away feared evil dreams, sealing the hymn with the recurring refrain of the Ādityas’ unerring helps.

The deity: Ādityas

  • In the VedaThe Ādityas are portrayed as unwavering guardians of ṛta (cosmic and moral order): clear-sighted, protective, and capable of turning away crookedness (druḥ) and sin (agha). Varuṇa and Mitra appear as a paired sovereignty—upholding law, truth, and social bonds—while the refrain stresses their “anehas” (harmless/unerring) helps.
  • Cosmic functionThey maintain ṛta by stabilizing the moral-cosmic fabric, protecting the sacrificer, and ensuring that disorder, deception, and misfortune do not reach one’s “portion.” In the concluding movement, Dawn (Uṣas) is invoked to dispel harmful dreaming and bring the day’s auspiciousness.
  • Inner significancePsychologically, the Ādityas represent the inner law of truthfulness, conscience, and clarity that protects the mind from self-deception and fear. Their ‘help’ is the steadying of intention and conduct so that one becomes ‘anāgas’ (without fault) and free from anxiety, especially the nocturnal fears symbolized by bad dreams.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn mainly addresses the Ādityas—especially Varuṇa and Mitra—as protectors of truth and order. In the final verse it also calls on Uṣas (Dawn) to drive away fear and evil dreams.

It is a refrain asking for the gods’ “helps/protections” (ūtayaḥ), described as “anehas” (harmless, unerring) and “su-ūtayaḥ” (good helps). It functions like a protective seal repeated through the hymn.

It asks to be guarded from hostility, deceit, and misfortune, and to receive peace, refuge, goodness, and an untroubled state. It also seeks inner purification—becoming ‘without fault’—and freedom from disturbing dreams as a new day begins.
