Vali’s Final Counsel and the Succession Charge
युगपद्विहितं तात न मन्ये सुखमावयोः।सौहार्द भ्रातृयुक्तं हि तदिदं तात नान्यथा।।
yugapad vihitaṃ tāta na manye sukham āvayoḥ | sauhārdaṃ bhrātṛ-yuktaṃ hi tad idaṃ tāta nānyathā ||
Hermano querido, no creo que la dicha esté destinada para los dos a la vez; pues este vínculo entre hermanos se ha vuelto amistad sólo de este modo—no hay otro desenlace.
'O dear! I believe that both of us are not destined to enjoy the love and happiness that come together to brothers.
It points to the dharma of restoring right relations between brothers: even when outcomes are painful, one should accept reconciliation and act without further hostility.
Mortally wounded, Vāli speaks to Sugrīva, reflecting on their fractured brotherhood and the hard fate that prevented shared happiness.
Acceptance and sobriety at the end of life—Vāli restrains resentment and frames the moment as a necessary reconciliation.
