Bālakāṇḍa 18
अतीत्यैकादशाहं तु नामकर्म तथाऽकरोत्।ज्येष्ठं रामं महात्मानं भरतं कैकयीसुतम्।।1.18.20।।सौमित्रिं लक्ष्मणमिति शत्रुघ्नमपरं तथा।वसिष्ठ: परमप्रीतो नामानि कृतवान् तदा ।।1.18.21।।
atītyaikādaśāhaṁ tu nāmakarma tathā'karot |
jyeṣṭhaṁ rāmaṁ mahātmānaṁ bharataṁ kaikayīsutam || 1.18.20 ||
saumitriṁ lakṣmaṇam iti śatrughnam aparaṁ tathā |
vasiṣṭhaḥ paramaprīto nāmāni kṛtavān tadā || 1.18.21 ||
Transcurridos once días, se celebró debidamente el rito del nombramiento: al primogénito, el magnánimo, se le dio el nombre de Rāma; al hijo de Kaikeyī, el de Bharata; al hijo de Sumitrā, el de Lakṣmaṇa; y al otro, el de Śatrughna. Así, Vasiṣṭha, colmado de gozo, les otorgó sus nombres.
When the army of the kings left the city (Ayodhya) for their own, the armed forces shone bright and cheerfl.
Dharma here is expressed as saṁskāra—life-rites performed in the proper time and manner—affirming social and spiritual order (satya as right order) through sacred duty.
After the princes’ birth, the family observes the prescribed interval; then the royal preceptor Vasiṣṭha conducts the formal naming ceremony and assigns each prince his name.
Vasiṣṭha’s priestly integrity and joy in righteous ritual performance; the royal household’s adherence to tradition and duty.
