Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that the highest spiritual result of a pilgrimage is gained not merely by visiting a sacred place, but by combining that act with personal purity (śauca) and good conduct (śīla). Ethical character is presented as the decisive qualifier for attaining an exalted destiny.

Within the tīrtha-māhātmya context of Vana Parva, the speaker is describing the fruit (phala) of visiting the Bhadratuṅga tīrtha: a pilgrim who arrives there in a purified state and with virtuous conduct is said to attain Brahmaloka and the supreme goal.
