abhiprāyam atho jñātvā mahendrasya vibhāvasuḥ | kuṇḍalārthe mahārāja sūryaḥ karṇam upāgataḥ ||
Dijo Vaiśampāyana: Al comprender la intención de Mahendra (Indra) respecto de los pendientes, Vibhāvasu—el dios Sol—se acercó a Karṇa, oh rey, para advertirle y guiarle, consciente del peligro moral que entraña entregar un don que lo despojaría de su protección natural.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Discernment must guide generosity: charity is virtuous, but giving away what enables one’s rightful duty and survival—especially under another’s hidden agenda—can become ethically complex. The verse highlights the need to recognize motives and protect dharma while remaining noble.
Indra desires Karṇa’s divine earrings (and by implication his protective endowments). Sūrya, perceiving Indra’s intention, approaches Karṇa to caution him and influence his decision before Indra’s request is made.
