mātrā pitrā ca subhṛśaṁ duḥkhitābhyām ahaṁ purā | upālabdhaś ca bahuśaś cireṇāgacchasīti ha ||
Yama dijo: «Antaño, mi madre y mi padre se afligían hondamente. Muchas veces me reprendían diciendo: “¿Por qué regresas tan tarde?”; pues aun si salía del eremitorio durante el día, se inquietaban, y mi padre partía con los moradores del eremitorio a buscarme.»
यम उवाच
The verse highlights filial responsibility as a component of dharma: one should act with awareness that even small delays or thoughtless departures can cause intense anxiety to parents and elders, and therefore one should be considerate, communicative, and prompt.
Yama recalls an earlier time when his parents, living in a hermitage setting, would become very distressed if he went away even during the day; his father would even go out with other residents to search for him, and they would repeatedly admonish him for returning late.
