Chapter 270: Slaying of Prahasta; Defeat of Dhūmrākṣa; Awakening of Kumbhakarṇa
ततो मृगव्यालगणानुकीर्ण महावनं तद् विहगोपधघुष्टम् | भ्रातृंश्ष तानभ्यवदद् युधिष्ठिर: श्रुत्वा गिरो व्याहरतां मृगाणाम्,उस समय हिंसक पशुओं और साँपोंसे भरा हुआ वह महान् वन सहसा चिड़ियोंके चीत्कारसे गूँज उठा तथा वन्य पशु भी भयभीत होकर आर्तनाद करने लगे। उन सबकी आवाज सुनकर धर्मराज युधिष्ठिरने अपने भाइयोंसे कहा--
tato mṛgavyālaganānukīrṇaṃ mahāvanaṃ tad vihagopadhaghuṣṭam | bhrātṝṃs tān abhyavadad yudhiṣṭhiraḥ śrutvā giro vyāharatāṃ mṛgāṇām ||
Entonces aquel gran bosque —colmado de manadas de bestias salvajes, fieras depredadoras y serpientes— resonó de pronto con el clamor de las aves. Los animales del monte, sobrecogidos por el miedo, comenzaron a lanzar gritos de angustia. Al oírlos, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira dijo a sus hermanos—
वैशम्पायन उवाच
A dhārmic leader remains attentive to signs of disorder and danger, reads the situation calmly, and communicates promptly for the protection of companions—here, Yudhiṣṭhira responds to nature’s alarm as a cue for vigilance and responsible action.
In the wilderness, the forest suddenly becomes noisy: birds cry out and wild animals utter fearful sounds. Hearing this, Yudhiṣṭhira speaks to his brothers, indicating that something unsettling or threatening is occurring nearby.
