Indradyumna Upākhyāna: On Kīrti, Smṛti, and Restoration
अल्पद्रव्या वृथालिड्डा हिंसा च प्रभविष्यति । न कश्चित् कस्यचिद् दाता भविष्यति युगक्षये,कलियुगके अन्तभागमें लोगोंके पास धन थोड़ा रहेगा और लोग दिखावेके लिये साधुवेष धारण करेंगे। हिंसाका जोर बढ़ेगा और कोई किसीको कुछ देनेवाला नहीं रहेगा
alpadravyā vṛthāliḍḍā hiṃsā ca prabhaviṣyati | na kaścit kasyacid dātā bhaviṣyati yugakṣaye ||
Mārkaṇḍeya dijo: «Al final de la era, los hombres poseerán apenas escasa riqueza, y muchos adoptarán las señales externas de santidad solo por apariencia. La violencia cobrará fuerza, y no quedará nadie que dé nada a nadie.»
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse warns that when dharma declines, society shows three linked symptoms: material scarcity, performative religiosity without inner virtue, and the rise of violence—culminating in the collapse of generosity (dāna), a key support of social and moral order.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing the characteristics of the age’s end (yugakṣaya), forecasting moral and social deterioration: people become materially constrained, adopt saintly appearances for display, violence becomes prevalent, and mutual giving and support disappear.
