Duryodhana’s Proposal to Detain Krishna
Envoy-Ethics Debate
The verse upholds ātithya-dharma (the duty of hospitality) and the ethical principle that those who are truly worthy—especially a noble emissary like Kṛṣṇa—must be honored properly; respect shown to the deserving safeguards righteousness and social order.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations, Vidura counsels the Kuru king to receive Kṛṣṇa with the hospitality he values, emphasizing that Janārdana is inherently deserving of honor—an implicit warning not to insult a righteous messenger and benefactor.
